Install Family Filter TV on Android TV or Google TV
Family Filter TV works on Android TV and Google TV sets, sticks and boxes running Android 7.0 or newer. Install it from Google Play if the Play Store lists it, or directly with the Downloader app if it does not. Both give you the same app.
Not sure what your TV runs? Press Home on the remote. If you see Google TV, or the Google Play Store among the apps, this guide is for your TV. Otherwise see Will it work on my TV?
Route 1: Google Play
Open the Play Store on the TV.
Search for Family Filter TV.
Choose Install, then Open.
If it does not appear in the search, use route 2.
Route 2: direct install with Downloader
This is the same app as a plain APK file. It works on any Android TV or Google TV running Android 7.0 or newer. The menu names below differ a little between TV makers.
Install Downloader
On the TV, install Downloader (by AFTVnews) from the Google Play Store.
Let Downloader install apps
On Android 7, go to Settings › Apps › Security & restrictions › Unknown sources and switch Downloader on. On Android 8 and later, go to Settings › Apps › Special app access › Install unknown apps, and switch it on for Downloader.
Enter the address
Open Downloader and type familyfiltertv.com/apk, then choose Go. The file downloads by itself.
Install it
When the download finishes, choose Install, then Open.
Allow updates
If Family Filter TV asks to install unknown apps too, allow it. That is what lets it check for and install its own updates later from its Settings screen.
Checking the newest direct install version…
SHA-256 of the file, if you want to check it: unavailable
No Play Store, so no Downloader? On a phone or computer, download the file from this link, copy it to a USB stick, plug the stick into the TV and open the file with the TV's file manager app.
Pick one route per device. The Google Play version and the direct version are signed differently, so Android will not install one over the other. To switch on the same device, uninstall the first, install the second, then sign in and link the TV again. The old entry keeps using one of your devices until you remove it under Account, Manage devices. A TV on one route and a phone on the other is fine.
First time you open it on the TV
Install it on your Android phone first, if you have not: phone install guide.
The TV shows a short code. On the phone, tap Account, then Link a device, and type the code.
On the TV, open Family Filter TV, choose Follow along, then Open settings, and switch Family Filter TV on. You only do this once. It lets the TV see what is playing.
Start a film or episode in any app on the TV. On the phone, search for the same title and tap Start following. The TV mutes the swearing it finds in the subtitles.
After it is installed
Open the app on the TV to see a short code, then link it from the phone and start following a title. The whole thing takes about five minutes.
Questions
Why can't I find Family Filter TV in the Play Store on my TV?
Google Play may not list it for your TV yet. Use the direct install with Downloader above. It is the same app and works on any Android TV or Google TV running Android 7.0 or newer.
It says the app was not installed. What now?
Almost always a copy from the other route is already on the TV, for example the Google Play version when you are installing directly. The two are signed differently and cannot go over each other. Uninstall Family Filter TV in the TV's Settings, then install again.
Android says unknown apps are blocked.
Switch on the unknown apps permission for Downloader, as in step 2 of the direct install. On Android 8 and later it is under Settings, Apps, Special app access, Install unknown apps.
Downloader cannot load the address.
Check that the TV is connected to the internet and that you typed familyfiltertv.com/apk exactly, with no spaces and no www.
Does it update itself?
The Google Play version updates through the Play Store. The direct version checks for a newer build from its own Settings screen and installs it after you allow unknown apps for the app.
Family Filter TV is an independent app. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Google, Netflix, Stremio or any TV maker. Guide last checked 11 October 2026.
