Family Filter TV
Profanity filter for Google TV
Family Filter TV works on Google TV. Google TV sets, sticks and boxes run the same system as Android TV, so the app works the same way. Install it on the TV and on an Android phone, link them, and it mutes spoken swear words (profanity) while the picture keeps playing. It uses the film’s subtitles, so muting is best effort and a line may slip through.
Is my TV a Google TV?
Press Home on your remote. If you see Google TV, or the Google Play Store among the apps, Family Filter TV works on that TV.
The system matters, not the brand. Some brands sell more than one kind of TV. Our page Will it work on my TV? has the brand-by-brand answer.
Do you have a TV that cannot run the app? A Google TV or Android TV streaming stick or box in an HDMI port is the simplest way today.
What you need
- A Google TV or Android TV set, stick or box.
- An Android phone (Android 7.0 or newer) with the app.
- Family Filter TV version 0.2.21 or newer on both, for follow-along with other apps. If Google Play still offers an older version, use the direct download.
- Subtitles for the film or episode. The app tells you when it cannot find them.
Set it up
Install Family Filter TV on the TV from Google Play. If the Play Store on your TV does not show it, use the direct install.
Install it on your phone, open it and sign in or create your account.
Link the TV. The TV shows a short code. On the phone, tap Account, then Link a device, and type the code.
Let the TV see what is playing. On the TV, choose Follow along, then Open settings, and switch Family Filter TV on. You only do this once.
Start a film. Press play on the TV. On the phone, search for the same title and tap Start following.
The setup guide has every tap.
