Does Netflix have a profanity filter?

No. Netflix has parental controls that decide which titles a profile can see, but we found no Netflix setting that mutes or bleeps swearing inside a title. To mute swearing while Netflix keeps playing, you need a separate tool, and on an Android TV or Google TV one option is Family Filter TV, which is not affiliated with Netflix.

What Netflix's built-in controls do

Netflix's help centre describes three controls: a maturity level you set for each profile, Kids profiles with their own rating limits, and the option to block specific shows and movies on a profile. All three work the same way. They decide which titles a profile is allowed to see.

None of them changes what is said inside a title you do allow. A film rated suitable for a profile still plays with its full soundtrack, and a profile that allows an adult drama plays every word of it. Maturity ratings are also a blunt tool for language: two titles with the same rating can differ a lot in how much swearing they contain, and a rating tells you little about a particular line.

That makes the built-in controls the right first step for keeping young children away from unsuitable titles, and the wrong tool for the question families usually mean when they ask this: “can we watch this one together and have the swearing taken out?”

Where Family Filter TV fits

Family Filter TV is an app that runs on the TV next to the Netflix app. You start the film or episode in Netflix on the TV, pick the same title on your Android phone, and the TV mutes the swearing it finds in the subtitles while the picture keeps playing. Nothing is cut, blurred or skipped, and when the episode ends the TV follows the next one by itself. You choose how strict the filter is: off, mild, family or strict.

It costs US$14.99 a year after a 14-day free trial; Google Play shows and charges the price in your local currency, and three devices are included. You watch with your own Netflix account, because Family Filter TV does not provide films or series.

The step-by-step version is on how to mute swearing on Netflix.

What to expect, and what it does not do

How to choose

Start with what you actually want removed. If it is only swearing, and you watch Netflix on an Android TV or Google TV, an app that mutes language is the simplest fit. If you also want violence or nudity taken out, or you watch on a device we do not run on, look at a broader filtering service instead, and check three things on its own site before you pay: whether it works in your country, whether it supports your Netflix plan (some services list only ad-free plans), and what it costs per year.

Before a film night you can also check how much swearing a particular title contains in our film language guides, which count the swearing from the film's subtitles.

Questions

Does Netflix have a profanity filter?

No. Netflix has parental controls that decide which titles a profile can see, but we found no Netflix setting that mutes or bleeps swearing inside a title. To mute swearing while the picture keeps playing, you need a separate tool.

Can I mute swearing on Netflix on my TV?

Yes, on an Android TV or Google TV. Family Filter TV runs on the TV next to the Netflix app and mutes the sound for the swear words it finds in the subtitles, while the picture keeps playing. Muting is best effort, so a line may slip through. Family Filter TV is not affiliated with Netflix.

Do Netflix Kids profiles remove swearing?

A Kids profile limits the maturity level of the titles it shows. It does not edit the audio of a title, so it is a way to choose what appears, not a way to mute words.

Do browser extensions that filter Netflix work on a TV?

No. Browser extensions run in a web browser on a computer. They do not run inside the Netflix app on a TV.

Does Family Filter TV filter violence or nudity on Netflix?

No. Family Filter TV mutes spoken profanity only. It does not filter violence or nudity, and it works for English titles for now.
