Parental controls vs a profanity filter
Parental controls decide which titles can be played, usually by age rating. A profanity filter works after that, inside a title you have allowed, and mutes the swear words. They do different jobs. Parental controls do not remove words from a film. A filter does not block a film. Many families use both.
What parental controls do
TV and app parental controls block by age rating. You set a limit, such as no films above a chosen rating. Often you set a PIN, too.
They are useful. They keep young children from starting adult titles. They also help when you are not in the room.
But they have limits:
- A rating is one label for a whole film. It does not tell you how many swear words there are.
- Rating systems differ between countries and apps.
- Once a title is allowed, everything in it is allowed.
- They are set separately on each TV, app and account.
What a profanity filter does
A profanity filter does not decide what can be played. It mutes spoken swearing in a title you have allowed. The picture keeps playing. Nothing is cut or skipped.
Family Filter TV has four levels: Off, Mild, Family and Strict. You pick how strict it is for your household. It mutes speech only. It does not filter violence or nudity.
It also has limits. It depends on subtitles. Muting is best effort, so a line may slip through. It does not block anything, so a child can still start any title the TV allows.
Side by side
| Parental controls | Profanity filter | |
|---|---|---|
| What it acts on | Which titles can start | Spoken words inside a title |
| How it decides | Age rating | The film’s subtitles |
| Blocks a film? | Yes | No |
| Mutes swearing? | No | Yes, best effort |
Looking for Stremio parental controls?
Family Filter TV works with Stremio. Stremio’s own settings are separate from ours. We do not control them. Check Stremio’s settings for what it offers.
Which add-ons are installed in Stremio is each person’s own choice. Stremio plays nothing until add-ons are added. So a mute filter does not replace your own care about what is added. Family Filter TV is not made by, affiliated with, or endorsed by Stremio.
Using both together
- Use parental controls to set which ratings can start on each screen.
- Use a filter for the swearing inside titles you have allowed.
- Keep talking with your children about what they watch.
To try the filter, see which TVs work. There is a 14-day free trial, then US$14.99 a year. You can also read our guide to a family movie night without the swearing.
