What the others do that Family Filter TV does not
It is worth being plain about this, because the right choice depends on it.
- Violence and nudity. VidAngel and ClearPlay filter violence and sex or nudity alongside language, and Enjoy Movies Your Way covers violence through tags. Family Filter TV mutes spoken profanity and nothing else.
- More platforms. VidAngel and Enjoy Movies Your Way list apps for Roku, Fire TV and iPhone or iPad. Family Filter TV runs only on Android TV, Google TV, Android TV boxes and Android phones, and not on the built-in apps of Samsung, LG and other non-Android TVs.
- A free plan. Enjoy Movies Your Way lists one. Family Filter TV has a 14-day free trial, then a paid subscription.
- Hardware for cable and DVD. TVGuardian works from closed captions on a box, which suits a cable or DVD setup where an app cannot run.
What Family Filter TV does differently
Family Filter TV is an app that mutes spoken profanity while the picture keeps playing, using the subtitles for the title. Nothing is cut, blurred or skipped. It works with supported Stremio playback, and it can follow along while you watch Netflix and other apps on an Android TV or Google TV: you pick the title on your Android phone and the TV mutes the swearing. Muting is best effort, so a line may slip through, it works for English titles for now, and it depends on subtitles being available. It is not limited to one country, and one household setting on the phone (off, mild, family or strict) covers every linked device, with three included and up to six.
Which one fits
- You are in the United States and want language, nudity and violence all filtered: look at VidAngel, ClearPlay or Enjoy Movies Your Way first.
- You watch on Roku, Fire TV or Apple TV: look at the services whose sites list those devices.
- You only want swearing muted, and you watch on an Android TV or Google TV: Family Filter TV is built for that.
- You watch cable or DVD on a TV with closed captions: look at TVGuardian.
- You are outside the United States: confirm country support on each service's own site before paying.
