Profanity filter browser extension or television: what is the difference?
Plain answer: a browser extension such as Advanced Profanity Filter works inside the browser it is installed in. It can change words on web pages and mute the sound of videos on sites it supports. It does not reach apps on a television. Family Filter TV works on the television side, on Android TV and Google TV, and has an early-beta Windows companion for a computer.
Two different places to filter
Advanced Profanity Filter is an open-source browser extension. Its project page describes it as filtering profanity from web pages in three modes (censor, substitute or remove), with customisable word lists, and as muting audio on videos from supported sites. It lists Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari and Opera as supported browsers and points to its own pages for the full list of supported sites. The project page states no price and links to donation options.
Family Filter TV filters on the television itself. It mutes profanity in speech while the picture keeps playing, on Android TV and Google TV sets and boxes with a companion app on an Android phone. There is also an early-beta companion for Windows 10 and 11 PCs that mutes the computer's sound for whatever is playing in a browser or app.
| Compared | Browser extension (Advanced Profanity Filter) | Family Filter TV |
|---|---|---|
| What it filters | Words on web pages, and audio on videos from supported sites (per its project page) | Spoken profanity only, muted while the picture keeps playing. Nothing is cut, blurred or skipped. It does not filter violence or nudity. |
| Where it runs | Desktop browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, Opera. Check the project page for Android and other options. | Android TV and Google TV sets and boxes, with a companion app on an Android phone. Not the built-in apps of Samsung (Tizen), LG (webOS), Roku or Fire TV. Plus an early-beta companion for Windows 10 and 11 PCs. |
| What you need | A supported browser and a supported site | An Android TV or Google TV device and an Android phone. It depends on subtitles being available for the title. |
| How it works | Changes page text and mutes video audio inside the browser | Works with Stremio on the TV. In follow-along mode (version 0.2.21 or newer) you watch Netflix or another app on the Android TV, pick the film or episode on the phone, and the TV mutes the swearing. English titles only for now. Filter levels are Off, Mild, Family and Strict, set once on the phone for every linked device. |
| Price | No price stated on its project page; it links to donation options | 14-day free trial, then US$14.99 a year; Google Play charges in local currency. Three devices included, up to six. |

Which one fits you
- Choose a browser extension if you mostly read or watch on a computer, want to change words on web pages as well as mute video, or want a free, open-source tool. Family Filter TV does not alter web page text.
- Choose Family Filter TV if the viewing happens on a television, because an extension in a computer browser does not follow you to the apps on the TV.
- Try the Windows companion if you watch on a PC and want the computer's sound muted for whatever is playing in a browser or app. It is an early beta, so expect rough edges.
- Both approaches depend on text for the video, such as captions or subtitles, so a title without them gives them nothing to work from.
