Family Filter TV
How to mute swearing on Netflix
To mute swearing on Netflix on an Android TV or Google TV, install Family Filter TV on the TV and on an Android phone, start the film in Netflix, and pick the same title on the phone. The TV then mutes the swear words while the picture keeps playing. Family Filter TV is not affiliated with Netflix.
What you need
- An Android TV or Google TV, or an Android TV box.
- An Android phone.
- Family Filter TV version 0.2.21 or newer on both. If Google Play still offers an older version, install from the download page.
- Your own Netflix account. Family Filter TV does not provide films or series.
The steps
Install Family Filter TV on the TV and on the phone, and sign in on the phone.
Link the TV with the short code it shows, and switch on Follow along on the TV. You do this once.
Start the film or episode in Netflix on the TV. On the phone, search for the same title and tap Start following.
The setup guide has every tap.
What happens while you watch
- The picture keeps playing. Nothing is cut or skipped.
- The TV mutes the swearing it finds in the subtitles, and the sound comes straight back.
- When the episode ends, the TV follows the next one by itself.
- You choose how strict the filter is for your household.
What to expect
Muting is best effort, so a line may slip through. It works for English titles for now, and only when subtitles are found for the title. It does not filter violence or nudity. It works on Android TV and Google TV, and not with the Netflix app built into Samsung, LG and other non-Android TVs.
